Sign-off is your last chance to change it

Most of the money in an influencer campaign is committed at one moment: when you approve the video. The fee is agreed, the post goes out, and any budget you put behind it as a paid advert follows the cut you signed off. After that you can count views, clicks and sales, but you can’t make the video better.

This year that moment comes quickly. Black Friday is Friday 27 November, and most Christmas videos will be signed off in the weeks before it. A few days spent checking a video now are worth more than any report in January.

Why a good influencer video can still miss

Influencer content is very good at getting watched. Zappi’s analysis of 3,303 social video adverts found that videos influencers made with brands stood out far more than polished brand adverts. But the same videos did much worse at making viewers link them to the brand.

People remember the video and forget whose it was. What helped most was showing the brand’s own distinctive assets in the video: its colours, pack, logo or sound (+0.70).

Picture this

A 20-second unboxing of a Christmas gift set. The influencer is funny, the reaction is genuine, and the pack doesn’t appear until second 12, by which point most viewers have scrolled on. The re-cut opens on the pack in their hands and has them say the brand name in the first line. Same footage, same influencer, but now even the people who leave early know whose it was.

That is exactly what a moment-by-moment read is for: it shows where attention falls away, so you can see whether the brand arrives before it does, while the video can still be re-cut.

So the question isn’t only “will people watch it?” It’s “will they know it’s ours, and will they want it?”

Five things to check before you approve

  1. The first three seconds. Does something happen before the thumb moves on?
  2. The brand, early and clearly. Is the product, pack or name on screen while people are still watching, and is it said out loud?
  3. The message you briefed. Would a viewer repeat the one thing you wanted them to take away?
  4. The influencer’s own voice. Does it sound like them, or like a script they were handed? Their audience can tell.
  5. One clear next step. A promo code, a link or a place to buy, said and shown.

Three ways to test, from quick to thorough

Quick

Ask people who match your audience

Show the video to ten of them and ask three questions: what was it for, who was it from, and would you look it up? It costs nothing but time. Treat the answers as rough, because the people you can easily reach are rarely a fair sample of the people you sell to.

Get a predicted read

A creative test predicts how an audience is likely to react to a video, moment by moment, before anyone outside your team has seen it. In Justify, Justify Intelligence, our AI, shows where attention rises and falls and what to change, and you can run it yourself on every cut. It’s a prediction, not a survey, so use it to choose between cuts and to fix weak moments.

Thorough

Test with real people

For a big bet, run two cuts as small paid adverts to the same audience for a few days and keep the one that holds attention and earns clicks. It costs money and needs finished videos, but the answer comes from real people.

Here is what a predicted read looks like, from our sample Creative Testing report:

Creative Testing sample report: when the pack is in view and when the brand name is said, second by second
When people will see the brand, second by second: here the pack is in view from 0:00 and the name is said at 0:02.

Decide what each answer means before you test

A test is only useful if it can change the decision. Agree up front which result leads to which outcome:

Put one round of edits in the influencer’s contract, so a re-cut is part of the deal rather than a favour.

Then keep the result. Once the video is live, compare what the test said with what happened: views, clicks, sales through the influencer’s promo code and, for a bigger campaign, what it did for the brand. Over a season you’ll learn how far to trust each kind of test, and whose videos land.

Justify reads both sides of that once the video is live: what each influencer sold through their promo code or link, once your Shopify or WooCommerce shop is connected, and, if you run a Brand Lift study, what the campaign as a whole did for the brand, measured with real people against a group who didn’t see it.
